Getting Started with this Courseware |
Building Database Applications with dBASE Plus.
This course is organized into 10 sessions. In each Session you will find Readings
that are drawn from the How-to documents in the dBASE KnowledgeBase. You should
begin each session by reading these documents in order to gain an understanding
of the Session topic. After reading the How-to documents, you will find a Tutorial
Assignment. The dBASE Tutorial Project will lead you step-by-step through
building the pieces of a database application.
In addition to the Readings and the Tutorial Assignments, each Session includes a Hands-on Project. The Hands-on Project is a database application that you develop in parallel to the Tutorial application. As the Tutorial guides you through the tasks required to build a database application, the Hand-on Project offers variation in data structure and object design, and will give you the opportunity to apply your new skills to novel situations.
Readings
This document provides an overview of the dBASE Plus designers and it included an explanation of how to use the form and report designers. It is a good idea to review this document even if you've already worked with the designers in the past. You are likely to find some tips that are new.
Tutorial Project
Preface
Phase
I: Getting Started
The first Phase of the dBASE Tutorial will provide an overview of the Project. It will guide you through the Project setup on your computer and offer some tips. It is important that you complete Phase I of the Tutorial before proceeding to Session 2.
Hands-on Project
Getting
Started with the Hands-on Project
The Hands-on Project is organized as an accompaniment to the the Tutorial. Each Course Session contains a section of the Hands-on Project that focuses on the same topic that is explored in the Tutorial Project. You may wish to work on the Hands-on Project at the same time you work with the tutorial. For example, you might read the How-to documents, then work on the specific phase of the tutorial, then work on the corresponding section in the Hands-on Project. After you have completed all these tasks, you would proceed to the next Session.
Another way to work through the material in this class would be to complete the readings and the Tutorial assignment for each Session, but wait on the Hands-on Project until you have completed the entire tutorial application. Then go back through each Session and build the Hands-on Project.
The hands-on Project will not instruct you in the step-by-step details of building the pieces of the application. You are welcome (indeed encouraged) to begin using your variation to what is learned in the Tutorial.
